Fans of Vinland Saga are eagerly waiting to finally find out when the epic story of Thorfinn will continue. After the emotional ending of Season 2, many are wondering: will there even be a third season, and if so, when will it be released? The Viking saga by Makoto Yukimura is one of the most popular historical anime of recent years – and that’s exactly why fans’ impatience is growing. We’ll take a look at how things stand with Vinland Saga Season 3, when it could realistically be released, and why the second season received criticism despite many positive reviews.

How Is Vinland Saga Season 3 Looking?

Officially, Vinland Saga Season 3 has not yet been confirmed, but there are plenty of signs that it will happen. Shortly after the finale of the second season in 2023, several people involved in the production spoke up – including character designer Takahiko Abiru, who hinted in a social media post that Thorfinn’s journey is not over yet. That statement, of course, fueled fans’ hopes even more.

A look at previous releases shows that Vinland Saga has never been produced in a hurry. The first season came out in 2019, and Season 2 started in early 2023 – about four years later. This gap suggests that several years could also pass between Seasons 2 and 3, if the series is indeed continued. The good news is that there’s no shortage of material: the manga on which the series is based was officially completed in July 2025. That means the producers have enough content to plan more seasons without waiting for new chapters.

However, producing an anime season is not a simple task. It requires a studio with available capacity, the approval of the rights holders, proper funding, and careful production planning. Studio MAPPA, which produced the second season, is currently very busy with major projects, including Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen. This makes a quick continuation difficult. Nevertheless, the likelihood that Vinland Saga will continue is very high – the fanbase is too large, the viewership too steady, and the franchise too popular worldwide.

When Could Season 3 Be Released?

The crucial question, of course, is: when can we realistically expect the third season? Looking at the release pattern so far, an early 2026 release seems like the earliest possibility. There were nearly four years between the first and second seasons – and since MAPPA is known for taking its time to ensure quality, a similar gap wouldn’t be surprising.

Some fans hope it could happen as soon as 2025. But so far, there has been no official announcement, no trailer, and no concrete release date. Major streaming platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll have also not hinted that a continuation is coming anytime soon. Realistically, fans will have to wait a while longer.

In other words: the chances are good that Vinland Saga Season 3 will happen, but the wait is likely to be long. Many observers currently expect that the series will be released sometime between late 2026 and early 2027. Of course, this depends on when the production studio actually begins working on it. If MAPPA or another studio has already started preparations behind the scenes, things could move faster – but at the moment, there’s no solid information about that.

What gives fans hope, however, is the fact that Makoto Yukimura’s manga is now fully completed. This means that the story’s ending is known and that there are still several arcs left to adapt. The next part of the story, the so-called “Eastern Expedition Arc”, could become the focus of Season 3 and lead Thorfinn’s story into new territory.

    Why Was Season 2 Criticized?

Although the second season of Vinland Saga received many positive reviews, it also faced some notable criticism. The main reason for this lies in the shift in tone between the first and second seasons. While Season 1 was characterized by action, battles, and the brutal Viking lifestyle, Season 2 focused much more on Thorfinn’s inner development. Instead of bloody fights, the story centered around themes of violence, guilt, and personal redemption. Some viewers found this thematic shift too quiet or slow-paced.

Another factor was the change of studios. While the first season was produced by Wit Studio, MAPPA took over for the second season. MAPPA is known for its excellent animation quality, but many fans noticed subtle differences in storytelling. The art style remained mostly the same, but the tone felt different – less epic, more emotional and introspective. Some viewers loved this change, while others missed the raw intensity of the first season.

The pacing was another talking point. Season 2 took its time developing Thorfinn’s character. For many, this was a bold and meaningful direction, as the series shows a former warrior trying to leave his violent past behind and find a new purpose. But for those who primarily watched for the battles, the slower pace could feel a bit drawn out. This shift certainly contributed to the mixed reactions to the season.

Despite the criticism, Vinland Saga Season 2 was generally well received. Many praised its mature storytelling, emotional depth, and realistic portrayal of trauma and forgiveness. In that sense, the season wasn’t bad – it was simply different. And that’s exactly what makes the anticipation for Season 3 so exciting, since many are now wondering whether Thorfinn’s story will return to more action or continue in a more philosophical direction.

Vinland Saga Season 3: What to Expect

The future of Vinland Saga looks promising, even without an official announcement. All signs point to Thorfinn’s journey continuing. Patience is still needed, but the manga provides enough material and fan interest remains strong. Most likely, we’ll have to wait until 2026 or 2027 before Season 3 finally arrives.

In the meantime, it’s worth rewatching the existing episodes or reading the manga to gain a deeper understanding of Thorfinn’s story. You might even notice details you missed the first time around. One thing is certain: when Vinland Saga Season 3 does arrive, we can look forward to strong emotions, powerful characters, and an impressively told continuation of one of the best historical anime of our time.
