Hardly any romance anime is still searched for as often years after its release as Maid Sama. Or more specifically: the question about a second season. Since 2010, fans around the world have been hoping for a continuation of the love story between Misaki Ayuzawa and Takumi Usui – but to this day, there has been no official announcement. So why is that? And is there still any hope?

The anime is based on the manga Kaichou wa Maid-sama! by Hiro Fujiwara and was produced by the studio J.C.Staff. It aired from April to September 2010 with 26 episodes and quickly became a fan favorite – mainly because of its strong female lead, the charming chemistry between the protagonists, and its classic mix of romance, comedy, and school life.

Maid Sama Season 2: Where Is It?

The short answer: There is currently no official confirmation of Maid Sama Season 2. Neither J.C.Staff nor the original publisher has announced a continuation. And that’s despite the fact that the manga was completed back in 2013 and still offers plenty of story material for at least one more season.

So naturally, fans keep asking: What’s the hold-up?

One issue could be the age of the series. The anime was released over 15 years ago – and in the fast-moving anime industry, that’s quite a long time. While today many series receive sequels shortly after Season 1 (especially thanks to streaming platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll), things were different in 2010. Back then, many anime adaptations mainly served as promotional tools for the manga.

On top of that, while Maid Sama was very popular, it didn’t reach the massive sales numbers of mega hits like My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga. That doesn’t mean the series wasn’t successful – but perhaps not successful enough to make a second season an immediate financial priority.

Still, the fanbase remains active to this day. Thanks to streaming releases and social media, the series experiences small waves of renewed popularity from time to time. Whenever a new romance anime becomes a hit, the question about Maid Sama Season 2 tends to resurface.

    Why Isn’t the Sequel Happening?

That’s the big question – and there are several possible reasons.

    1. Financial Considerations

Anime productions are expensive. A season with 12 to 24 episodes can easily cost several million dollars. Studios only invest in sequels if they expect clear financial returns, whether through Blu-ray sales, streaming licenses, merchandise, or international distribution deals.

In the case of Maid Sama, the challenge may be that the hype isn’t as fresh as it once was. Newer series often take priority because they come with stronger marketing potential.

    2. The Manga Is Finished

Ironically, that can also be a disadvantage. Since the manga has already been fully told, there’s less pressure to boost sales. Ongoing manga series often benefit significantly from an anime adaptation, which increases book sales. With a completed story, that incentive is partly reduced.

    3. Studio Scheduling

J.C.Staff has worked on numerous other projects over the past years. Anime studios usually plan their productions far in advance. Even if a sequel were being considered, it might not yet be publicly announced.

    4. Market Shifts

Romance and shoujo anime had a strong boom in the early 2010s. After that, the focus shifted more toward isekai, action, and fantasy series. Only in recent years has romance experienced a noticeable comeback. That could theoretically create a new opportunity for Maid Sama – but nothing is guaranteed.

    Is There Still Hope?

You can never completely rule out a second season. In the anime world, many series have returned after ten or even twenty years. Titles like Fruits Basket (which received a full remake) show that classics can get a second chance – sometimes as a reboot rather than a direct continuation.

A remake could actually make sense for Maid Sama. The manga provides enough material to adapt the full story from beginning to end with modern animation quality. Technically and creatively, that would be very appealing.

That said, until there’s an official announcement, everything remains speculation.

    How Much Story Is Left?

Season 1 only covers part of the manga. The original series consists of 18 volumes. The anime ends roughly in the middle of the overall story and leaves out important developments – especially regarding Misaki’s future and Usui’s background.

In other words: there’s definitely enough source material for another season of at least 12 to 24 episodes. From a storytelling perspective, nothing stands in the way of a sequel.

What Similar Anime to Maid Sama Are There?

If you don’t want to wait any longer – or realistically don’t expect a second season anymore – there are several romance anime that offer a similar vibe.

    1. Ao Haru Ride

A heartfelt school romance with a strong female lead and emotional depth. It has less comedy but more drama – perfect if you enjoy gradual character development.

    2. Horimiya

This series also focuses on the relationship between two very different personalities. The humor feels somewhat similar to Maid Sama, though presented in a more modern way.

    3. Special A

If you love the mix of rivalry and romance, this one is worth checking out. Strong personalities clash here as well, leading to plenty of entertaining moments.

    4. Ouran High School Host Club

An absolute classic in the shoujo genre. Packed with comedy, exaggerated characters, and romantic undertones – it has a charm comparable to Maid Sama.

    5. Kamisama Kiss

A blend of romance and fantasy. The chemistry between the main characters sometimes feels reminiscent of Misaki and Usui.

These series might make the wait a little easier.

Will Maid Sama Season 2 Ever Happen?

Realistically speaking, the chances are rather slim – at least in the near future. The more time passes, the less likely a traditional sequel becomes. The anime industry focuses heavily on new IPs and current trends.

However, the project has never been officially canceled. As long as there’s no definitive rejection, a small spark of hope remains. Sometimes all it takes is a new streaming deal or a major anniversary to revive a franchise.

For fans, that means staying patient – or rewatching Season 1 once again. And honestly, the series still holds up surprisingly well today.

    So What’s Next?

Maid Sama remains one of the most beloved romance anime of the 2010s. Even in 2026, fans continue asking, “When is Maid Sama Season 2 coming out?” – but there is still no official confirmation.

The reasons likely include financial considerations, shifting market trends, and the fact that the manga has already concluded. From a story perspective, however, there is more than enough material for a sequel or even a full remake.

Until then, all we can do is hope – and maybe feel a little nostalgic when Misaki returns to her maid café and Usui shows up with that signature grin, ready to cause trouble. And who knows? In the anime world, unexpected comebacks have happened before.
